of a small garage and have grown to two 25,000 square
foot warehouses. From the beginning, we have helped our

We do this by operating out of a warehouse rather than
a fancy showroom. We do not have high commission salespeople,
individual per item shipping costs, and the biggest culprit
(expensive advertising). In fact, over 70% of our business

humble beginnings, over the past few years, we have gown

is simple, "Help people save money on big ticket
items." We do that by keeping our overhead low. Our
warehouse is "no frills". We are not in an expensive
strip mall where our rent could be $30 a square foot.
We do not have high commissioned sales people. Because
we typically buy by the truckload, we do not have individual
per item shipping costs, and the biggest culprit (expensive
advertising). We have never spent a dime on television
or radio advertising. In fact, last year over 70% of our
business was referrals and repeat customers.
However, here is how a typical retail store works. Let's
say you go into a local hot tub store. (Keep in mind they
only sell hot tubs and pools) Here is how it works; let's
say the store's cost to buy and ship the tub to the store
is $4000. Most traditional retailers work on what's called
a 50% margin. Now what that means is that they have to
sell that item for $7999, which would equal out to be
a $4000 gross profit for the store. Sales men usually
earn 5-6% of that, so in this case, it would be $480.00
in commission (not bad). This is not mentioning add-on
sales such as cover, steps, chemicals, and any other incentives.
Sometimes if sales people get above and beyond the 50%,
then the store will split that 50/50 with them.
We are not saying that they are doing anything wrong.
They just have a different business model than we do.
We do not have to be at the 50% margin. We make decent
money at the 10-15% margin because of our overhead. That
same hot tub we would sell for $4799. In doing this, you
would save $3200 and we would still make a profit -- that
is fair. There is nothing wrong with profit; it's just
how much.
